  • Trauma Stories

Trauma Stories: Discovering Strength Through Our Vulnerabilities

Marcken wrote Trauma Stories to share how he overcame his past traumas, and also to help others find value in their own trauma story. Trauma Stories is an eclectic blend of tragedies and triumphs. In this book, Marcken details his personal account of family suicide, abuse, disappointment, and near death experiences. Marcken also touches on the personal accounts of past clients who went through some of life’s most horrific experiences. Marcken’s trauma story along with that of his past clients will take you on a journey of valley lows and mountain highs. Trauma Stories will help to normalize the power in sharing our stories, and how we’re able to re-author our life’s narrative once we’ve healed from our traumas.

  • Keynote Speaker

I strongly believe that being relatable and informative are the best ways to engage with those that are curious about mental health. Trauma is multi-layered and will take consistency and patience on the part of both client and clinician when healing. Public speaking is a great medium that helps to educate and normalize therapy for those that may have never set foot in a therapist’s office.

Info on Trauma

Trauma can not be processed by simply talking about it. Trauma is stored in the nervous system, and your therapist should help you to become more aware of your body’s response to triggers, and present day symptoms, such as depression and anxiety. Talk therapy focuses on the cognitive part of the mind, which is the top part of the brain. But trauma affects the middle and lower parts of the brain, such as the brainstem and the limbic system. Trauma modalities such as Internal Family Systems (IFS), EMDR, Mindfulness Techniques, and Somatic Exercises are great modalities to help clear the trauma tension that’s stored in your body.

Interoception is to become more aware of the sensations in your body. The next time you’re feeling anxious or depressed, pay attention to where you’re feeling the disturbance in your body, and learn to sit with that. We live in a culture that’s terrified of solitude and learning to sit with their thoughts and emotions in order to become more present.

Your autonomic nervous system has two states. They are parasympathetic and sympathetic. The sympathetic state activates the fight and flight response in your body to alert you of a threat. The parasympathetic state activates rest and digest response, which will help you to feel more relaxed and calm. Your heart rate will slow down when you’re in the parasympathetic state and you will feel a lot more present in the moment.
